Cloud computing for your startup
by Phil on Jan.28, 2009, under Blog
Cloud computing makes perfect sense for a startup. Founders can worry less about scaling and more about the company itself. I find myself recommending it to more startups because of the many advantages. It can benefit almost any business from social networking to ecommerce.
For my own company we have decided to host everything on the AWS cloud. We use EC2 for our web services, EBS to save server images, S3 for general content storage, and CF for static/high traffic content. This combination helps us to grow without having to deal with scaling headaches.
Advantages of Amazon Web Services:
- Cost savings without sacrificing reliability is crucial. We are able to pay for what we use rather than overbuy to compensate for traffic spikes (ie: The Digg effect)
- Virtually unlimited resources for a growing company. We are always demanding more resources as our website grows, AWS allows for us to simply turn on more instances as we need to.
- High availability to ensure our website is always reachable. Although AWS has had outages in the past, it is still very reliable and is backed by a 99.5/99.8% SLA.
